Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mariola SATERNUS, DSc

Silesian University of Technology, Katowice, Poland, EU

Position: Associate Professor in Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Materials Engineering, Department of Metallurgy and Recycling

At the METAL´22 conference Assoc. Prof. Mariola Saternus will present the plenary lecture: The Synergistic Effect of the Optimal AlNi Addition to the Zinc Bath as an Alternative to the Baths Containing Pb, Bi and Sn.

Scientific and research activity is related to the broadly understood extractive metallurgy, mainly in four research areas related to:

  1. mathematical and physical modeling of metallurgical processes, mainly aluminum refining processes, but also secondary steel refining processes,
  2. recovery of platinum metals (platinum, rhodium and palladium) from used car catalysts by hydro- and pyrometallurgical methods,
  3. recovery of metals from used waste materials, mainly printed circuit boards (PCBs), using hydro - and biohydrometallurgical methods,
  4. constitution of anti-corrosion metal coatings obtained by immersion method, testing their structure and properties.

Dr. Saternus participated in 19 research projects, including 5 of them as project manager. She also participated in 3 projects co-financed by the European Union, as the manager of 3 scientific and research works. Co-author of one patent.

Scientific achievements include 192 publications in total, 96 of which are articles in peer-reviewed foreign and domestic journals. Author or co-author of 63 articles in journals from the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) list. Dr. Saternus is also the co-author of four scientific books for students in the field of chemistry in Polish and English, as well as hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy, and the author of 2 scientific monographs and co-author of 12 chapters in monographs. H-index - 14 in the Web of Science database.

Dr. Saternus was 16 times awarded by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technologies for the scientific, organizing and didactic activities. She received the Excellent Article Award 2016 in Acta Metallurgica Sinica (English Letters). She is reviewer of Polish and Slovak projects (NCN, NCBiR, APVV) and articles in many journals (Hydrometallurgy, Journal of Cleaner Production, Waste Management, Materials, Metals). Took part in 17 study visit, mainly in Helsinki, Finland; Technical University of Kosice TUKE, Slovak Republic; VSB in Ostrava, Czech Republic; Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic; The Institute of Technology and Business in Ceskie Budejovice, Czech Republic; Czech and Slovak Galvanizers Association in Ostrava, Czech Republic; Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Slovak Republic. Since 2018 actively cooperating with Czech and Slovak Galvanizers Association from Ostrava.

It also carries out activities that support the development of Polish science by disseminating, promoting and popularizing the results of research and development and innovation. She is involved in activities popularizing sciences, mainly chemistry and metallurgy, also in primary schools and high schools. He actively participates in Science Festivals, Scientists' Nights and lectures for the Universities of the Third Age.
